In 2003, South Metro water providers collaborated with Denver Water, the west slope, and the state to produce the South Metro Study Board Report. SMWSA was built out of that effort and was formed in 2004 to pursue regional renewable water supply projects. In 2007, SMWSA completed its first official Regional Master Plan, which helped define the components of near-term, mid-term, and long-term renewable supply sources and infrastructure. SMWSA’s Master Plan was first updated in 2011.
In 2014, SMWSA contracted with CH2MHILL to develop an updated Regional Master Plan. The goal of the Master Plan update is to update our members’ collective demands and identify a range of regional renewable water supply goals, develop strategies and opportunities to optimize existing infrastructure, and analyze potential future water supply projects. Phase 1 of this effort was completed in 2014, and Phase 2 began in early 2015.
